How to get started

Getting started in model flying is easier than you may think. The great part is that the journey of learning how to fly is a lot of fun!

There are a number of considerations before you begin your journey.

There are many regulations that govern model flying in Australia. To keep it simple, your best place to fly a model aircraft is a model flying club.

1. Visit a model flying club

Visiting your local flying club is the best way to get started. It will give you a feel of the activity at the club and connect you with experienced aeromodellers that can guide you through the process of getting involved.

Some clubs may have a model trainer plane that you can begin to learn how to fly prior to purchasing your own. You can visit a model flying club 4 times before joining.

Every club has dedicated flying instructors that will teach you how to fly to a proficient level.

2. Join a club

Now that you have decided that you want to become an aeromodeller, you should join a model flying club as the members will become a key resource as you take your first steps. You will also begin to form a social connection which soon will become a new friendship group.

3. Purchase your model flying gear

It’s a fun journey purchasing your first model plane equipment.

There are lots of different types of models to purchase, but we recommend starting out with a dedicated trainer model before progressing to something more advanced.

If flying radio control aircraft you will need to purchase a transmitter. We suggest considering your future model flying plans as your transmitter will stay with you as you progress into other aircraft…and you will progress into other aircraft.

Model flying gear is available from hobby stores around Australia as well as online stores. There is also a large second hand market that will allow you to purchase gear at affordable rates. Your local flying club members can give you some advice as to where they purchase their gear.

4. Practice

The more you fly your models, the more proficient you will become. Once you join a flying club you have the freedom to fly during the day as you like.

A great way to practice model flying at home is to use a model flying simulator. A simulator will allow you to connect your transmitter to a computer and fly virtually. They are a great way to build up muscle memory that will translate to the flying field.
